World migration trends are rapidly changing and more countries in the west are confronted with major challenges for integration of adjustment of new immigrants in their new home society. Moreover, due to globalization, Western countries have been experiencing major economic, political, and social transformations. Each year millions of migrants, refugees, and political asylees leave their home country in search of better economic opportunities and more socio-political freedom. As such, immigration has become a major social and political force in the West and states are developing new immigration policies that are more consistent with the new realities of their society. Given the increase in the global flow of immigrants and refugees and the massive economic, social, political, and cultural consequences for both sending and receiving societies it is urgent for the graduate students at University of Gdansk to learn about the dynamic of global migration and as well its causes and consequences. Inviting a scholar specializing in migration will provide an opportunity for our faculty and students to learn about the dynamics of this prevailing global force.
The primary goal of this 4-week visit is to provide graduate ad PhD students with interdisciplinary understanding of the present realities of contemporary global migration and to understand the consequences of immigration for migrant sending and receiving societies.

Lectures for students will be presented weekly and workshops will be conducted biweekly. The aim of the first workshop is to provide an opportunity for students to have an applied methodological experience in examining the extent, reliability, and interpretation of immigration data. The second workshop is an exercise in visual anthropology and it is designed for students to have a deeper understanding of the real life challenges of immigrants in their everyday life through film. The nature of activities designed for the workshops are very consistent with the lectures. Migration is one of the most important topics in modern humanities and social studies and incorporating this topic to our courses by professor Mobasher will not only enhance student’s understanding of this global process but also will give them practical research and theoretical skills during planned workshops.
